My Child Has a Cavity:
WHAT CAN I DO?

If your little one has signs of a cavity, they’ll need to see a pediatric dentist as soon as possible. Cavities can worsen over time; if left untreated, they can cause pain, infection, and even tooth loss. Talk to your child’s dentist about the best way to fill the cavity.

Depending on the severity and location of the cavity, the dentist may recommend a dental filling, crown, or other treatment to restore the tooth. If your child experiences increased pain or swelling, fever, trouble eating, or pus draining from the tooth, you should contact Dr. Zeinali right away for treatment.

Common Causes of
CAVITIES?

Cavities in children can be caused by acids, saliva, foods, and bacteria. Acidic foods and drinks can break down the tooth’s enamel, making them more susceptible to bacterial attacks and cavities. Eating sugary foods like candy, cereals, and soda can also increase the risk of cavities because sugar sticks to the teeth for longer periods of time.

Although every child is at risk for cavities, there are some factors that may increase that risk. This includes low saliva production, poor oral hygiene, fluoride deficiency, eating a diet high in starches and sugars, and higher levels of bacteria in your child’s mouth.

Dental Filling Treatment
PROCESS

STEP 1 Consultation And Examination

The initial step in the dental filling treatment process is to examine the teeth to decide the best course of action for the child. Dr. Zeinali will assess your child’s teeth and take X-rays to determine the level of decay and the type of filling material needed. Many material options are available for a dental filling, including composite bonding, silver amalgam, and porcelain glass ionomer.

STEP 2 Filling Placement

The second step is filling placement. First, your Bell Gardens children's dentist will prepare the tooth for restoration by removing the damaged parts of the tooth. Then they will place the filling material into the cavity. The dentist will then use a special light to cure and harden the filling.

STEP 3 Finishing

After placing the filling material, our children's dentist will trim and polish the filling to match the color and shape of your child’s natural teeth. This step is important as it helps your child’s bite to feel normal.

STEP 4 Follow-up

Once the treatment is complete, it is important to discuss with the dentist how decay can be stopped from forming near the filling. Our children's dentist will schedule a follow-up appointment to check the condition of the filling and your child’s teeth. They may also recommend that your child practice good oral habits, such as brushing their teeth at least twice a day and flossing daily. You should ensure that your child follows the dentist’s instructions for oral hygiene. Keeping up with follow-up appointments is essential for checking the progress of the teeth with the filling.
